The Vision Board Strategy That's Working Wonders For Me

The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision. -Helen Keller

One of the ways to tap into our vision (and to avoid being the lameos that HK talks about) is to create vision boards.

Since vision-boarding made an appearance in my life a few years ago, the process has been an evolving one. What started as a mad scramble to cut out photos and headings from magazines has turned into a calming, organized, ongoing work of art and inspiration.

Read on for my winning strategy.

Method 1: Get Clear

A vision board is a collection of photos, words, and other visual representations of your dreams for the future. The purpose of your board is to inspire action toward your goals and to remind you that your vision can (and will) be brought to life!

Your vision board can be specific or can reflect more of a vibe. It can feature long term goals and/or short term goals. However you create your board, make sure it aligns with you and is dialed in to your true desires.

Some years, I've separated my board into sections (personal life, career goals, travel, long term goals) and at other times I've let the board flow together with no set organization.

Take time to get still and plan what you'd like your board to display before starting the creative process.

Method 2: Take Your Sweet Time

Traditionally, vision boarding is a one-time event. Think late December, friends, champagne, magazines and glue sticks. While VB parties are a delight, visualizing + creating under time constraints can invite in some unwelcome anxiety.

This year, my bestie, Amiyra, and I put our own twist on the process. We made vision boarding just that, a process - one that's still going on and will continue throughout the year.

Our first attempt at vision boards a few years ago included poster boards, messy magazines, and an underlying sense of pressure. When we decided to create boards again this year, we ditched the frenzy and agreed that ease would be our M.O.

Method 3: Go Digital

Part of de-stressing the VB process was the decision to go digital. We searched for and saved images on Pinterest and Instagram, and used Canva to create digital drafts of our boards.

Laying out our boards digitally felt less frantic and allowed us to create clean, aesthetic boards. This also provided multiple platforms to see visual reminders of our goals, which is always a good thing!

Method 4: Print Photos

Printing the photos we saved from Instagram and Pinterest changed everything! This step allowed for clean cut lines on our boards and decreased the frantic energy by a lot.

Method 5: Cork Board + Push Pins + Gold Letters

Since we decided to create both digital and physical vision boards, we created ways to make our physical boards more aesthetic and less gluey.

Our cork boards and push pins make editing our boards throughout the year easy and inviting, and who doesn't need more sparkly gold letters in their life?
